One gym, several court configurations

A field house might run as three full volleyball courts, or as one court with spectator space for a match, or be shared with basketball on cross-courts. Each configuration uses the same floor and excludes the others. Modelling the courts as independent bookable resources without linking them produces exactly the failure you would expect: a tournament booked on the full floor and a club practice booked on court 2 at the same time.

Linked resources solve it. Booking the full floor removes the individual courts from availability, and booking any individual court removes the full-floor option. The facility can then advertise both products safely.

Club season, league night and open play are different products

Junior club volleyball takes recurring practice blocks across a long season. Adult leagues take a weeknight for a term and need fixtures. Open play and drop-in sell per person rather than per court, and are the only product where you are managing a headcount instead of a reservation.

Per-person drop-in with a capacity limit is the one that generic court-booking tools handle worst. It needs a cap, a waitlist when the cap is hit, and payment per player — not a court reservation with a name on it. Facilities that run open play well treat it as a ticketed session, which also gives them the attendance data to know which nights are worth running.

Sand courts add a weather and season dimension

Outdoor beach volleyball is intensely seasonal and weather-dependent, and most sand facilities pair it with an indoor operation that peaks in the opposite half of the year. The practical need is for the same account and the same league structure to move between the two without customers having to re-register.

It also raises the same cancellation question as any outdoor sport: a clear, automatically applied policy on what happens when a session is rained off, so that staff are not deciding case by case on a wet Tuesday.

Tournaments justify holding weekends back

A volleyball tournament takes every court for a day or two and returns far more than the courts would earn hired individually. Like every facility sport, the constraint is that the weekend has to be reserved before the demand for it is known.

Holding tournament dates as full-floor blocks at the start of each season, and letting club and league scheduling fill in around them, avoids having to displace a paying customer later.
