Convertible courts must be modelled as linked resources

The economics of pickleball and padel have pushed most racquet centres into conversion: a tennis court that becomes four pickleball courts, a sports hall that lines out for badminton or basketball depending on the night. Every one of these arrangements has the same requirement — booking the space in one configuration must remove the others from availability.

Centres that instead create each configuration as an independent resource discover the flaw the first busy weekend, when a tennis booking and a pickleball booking land on the same court. Linked resources make the exclusion automatic rather than a thing staff have to remember.

Each sport has its own session length and rhythm

Squash runs in 45-minute slots, tennis in hours, padel typically in 90-minute blocks for four players, pickleball in short rotating sessions, badminton in hours. A centre that imposes one slot length across everything either wastes court time or forces awkward bookings.

Slot length, buffer and booking horizon configured per sport — on the same underlying court — is what lets a mixed centre sell each sport the way its players expect to buy it.

Padel and pickleball changed the membership question

Both sports brought in players who had no prior relationship with racquet clubs and who often do not want a full membership. They book, they pay, they leave. That is a different customer from the tennis member who pays annually and expects court access as part of it.

The centres handling this well run both models side by side: members retain priority booking windows on the courts they have always used, while pay-and-play pricing opens the newer sports to casual bookers. Keeping both on one calendar is what stops the new revenue from cannibalising the membership base.

Coaching is a resource, not a calendar entry

A coaching session consumes a coach and a court at the same time, and either can be the binding constraint. A centre with six courts and two coaches cannot sell six simultaneous lessons, and a system that only tracks courts will let it try.

Modelling coach availability alongside court availability means a lesson booking checks both. It also gives the centre visibility of coaching revenue and coach utilisation, which is usually invisible when each coach keeps their own diary.
