Fill Every Hour of Ice Time

Seasonal ice contracts come first, and everything else fits around them

Minor hockey associations, figure skating clubs and adult leagues contract for ice months before the season, usually as a recurring weekly commitment across a defined term. That contracted ice is the rink’s revenue base and is negotiated in bulk rather than booked slot by slot.

The scheduling consequence is that a rink calendar has to support long-horizon recurring blocks with contract terms attached — the season dates, the weekly pattern, the rate, and who is responsible for payment — before it deals with anything else. Public skating, drop-in and one-off rentals then fill the gaps that remain, and the gaps are where the margin is.

Released ice is the single biggest recoverable loss

Associations do not use every hour they contract. Tournaments take teams away, holidays fall mid-week, and a team folds in November. Those hours get handed back, and at most rinks they are resold through a phone tree and a group chat — which means a meaningful share of them are simply never sold.

Because ice is priced at a premium and the marginal cost of an unsold hour is nearly the same as a sold one, this is where a rink recovers the most money for the least effort. Released hours that go back into public availability automatically, visible to every other user of the building, convert a large fraction of what previously evaporated.

Ice types are not interchangeable and should not be priced as if they were

Prime ice — weekday evenings and weekend daytime — sells out. Non-prime ice at six in the morning and eleven at night does not, and never will at the prime rate. Rinks that run a single hourly rate leave money on prime hours and leave non-prime hours empty.

Separate prime and non-prime rates, plus dedicated products for the awkward hours — adult drop-in at 10pm, senior skate at 9am, figure skating patch ice at 6am — is how a rink pushes utilisation past the level that contracted hockey alone delivers.

Tournaments and blocked ice need to be held early

A tournament weekend consumes every hour on every sheet and is worth several times the equivalent contracted ice, including the ancillary revenue that comes with a full building. It also has to be committed before the season schedule is built.

Holding tournament blocks first, then layering association contracts, then opening what remains to public and casual booking, is the ordering that avoids the worst outcome — having to buy your way out of a commitment because two claims on the same weekend were made by two different people.
